Jay Conrad Levinson’s book ‘Guerrilla Marketing for Consultants’; it is a must read.

He makes the point that your web site is essential to your success in your business as a ‘consultant’ - which he reckons has a very wide definition essentially meaning anyone who is running their own business. The book uses research and validated data to prove his points. What you’ll learn is that your web site needs to ‘give away’ your intellectual property. Yes - your ‘content’ needs to be on your site.

Jay is set against the ‘brochure’ approach of most web sites because research shows that people just skip past such sites. What people are looking for is what you know. If you have the right kind of knowledge, you are likely to be booked to help a client.

What this means, says Jay, is that your site needs to be filled with original content - ebooks, white papers, reports and so on. He says you can retain some of your intellectual property, if you wish. But the people doing the best on the Internet (in terms of sales) are those whose information, which they would normally deliver in workshops/consultancy sessions/speeches etc, is available (mostly free) on their web site.

He also says ‘throw away your brochures’ - people these days ignore brochures because they are full of marketing speak (and sometimes hype). Instead, people want solid content.
